ABSTRACT

The verb 되다 means “become,” as shown in below:

열심히 공부해서 의사가 됐습니다.

“(He) studied hard, and then became a medical doctor.”

식사 시간이 되면 알려 주세요.

“When (it) becomes mealtime, please (let me) know.”

However, as an auxiliary verb, ~게 되다 (made of the adverbial form ~게 and the verb 되다 “become/be”) is used to express how things happened/resulted (often by chance or outside of the speaker’s control). Its English equivalent would be “turns out” or “come out to be.”
