ABSTRACT

Children and adults hold specific social positions such as a “child”, “parent” and “grandparent”, each of which is defined in relation to each other and within specific social structures. Each of these positions of being a child, parent and grandparent affects the actions of the people holding these positions, which in turn, are affected by the actions of each of them. This chapter attempts to position childhood in relation to other social positions and actions. It unveils the meaning of motherhood, fatherhood and grandparenthood for adults holding these positions. It examines parents’ and grandparents’ voices on the importance of children in their lives. It also gives the stage to the children to state their importance in the lives of their parents and grandparents.
