ABSTRACT
The question of what education is for is debated by teachers, school leaders, politicians and the general public alike. It is not one on which I anticipate agreement in my lifetime, but it is crucial to unpick, because when we ask how we can get pupils to value education, we also must bear in mind that if we are not clear on what education is for, we might understand why they are not clear on what they are valuing.
