ABSTRACT

When we think about teenagers, we think about that archetype of a teenager, Holden Caulfield. The character typifies the kind of angst and cynicism we quite often find in today’s teenagers:

If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you’ll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don’t feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth. 1

When I turned the first pages of Catcher in the Rye, I was fifteen years old. I did not stop turning pages until I finished, and it was the first book I read cover to cover in a single sitting. Finally, I remember thinking, a book that gets me.
