ABSTRACT

This chapter has three principal purposes. First, it positions the Empowering Song approach as a springboard to storytelling in different modes. The authors discuss narratives in relation to physical storytelling, poetry, songwriting, visual arts, and other artistic representations. Secondly, the chapter suggests that, to have justice-based storytelling, educators and leaders must create opportunities for egalitarian dialogue, drawing a distinction from monologue-based practice. One of the fundamental purposes of dialogic narrativism is to listen deeply, and for the chapter's third purpose, the authors explore the process of listening in workshops and performances. In this chapter, one of the most illustrative in the book, the authors build the argument that dialogue, storytelling, and listening are interwoven and belong together.
