ABSTRACT

The component parts of the limbic system and its functions are explained, especially the amygdala. The mechanism of amygdala activity through its connections during emotions are described. Changes that occur in the brain during specific emotional events including happiness, love, religious experiences, music and paranormal events are discussed. Jerusalem syndrome and Stendhal syndrome are both identified and described. The importance of music with regards to the brain is emphasised, with specific brain areas involved in musical experience. The genetics involved in musical interest and talent are identified. The brain areas involved in paranormal activity, including derealisation syndrome and near-death experiences, are identified.
