ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the changes that occurred in teaching and learning, and the human connections needed between teachers, leaders, students, and their communities during these transitions. Typically, the traditional conventions of schools are related to time linked to daily schedules and the school calendar. One of the most significant questions that educators will need to ask is whether teaching and learning as we know it will permanently change because of what we learned when the schoolhouse doors closed. While these traditional conventions are shifting due to the design of virtual environments, the largest impact on the work of teachers will be driven by a new understanding of what students should know and be able to do to be successful in their world. As teachers and leaders build new instructional systems the question that needs to be answered is how to build human capital with teachers, students, and parents in a virtual world.
