ABSTRACT

Data collected during the assessment process are heavily influenced by the surroundings in which they are obtained. Considerations around room setup, items in the space, and possibilities for distraction require a full sensory overview of the testing environment. Chapter 10 reviews many opportunities for unwanted distraction or discomfort that can be minimized when structuring the testing space. It reviews the impact of what can be seen, heard, smelled, and touched in the environment, with suggestions around ways to minimize distractions to the extent possible. Finally, it discusses the sensory experience of clients to assist psychometrists in understanding the role they play in obtaining valid data, outside of standardized test administration.
