ABSTRACT

Chapter 11 discusses ways to introduce oneself to interact with and respond to clients who come for testing. Clients arrive at our offices with diverse expectations and emotions. Despite our best efforts to share information about what the day will entail, it seems that the majority of clients we see are not entirely sure of what to expect when they arrive for the testing appointment. Thus, those initial moments upon arriving to the office can be the most critical in terms of setting expectations and, more importantly, putting the client at ease. Once settled in the testing room, the client may react or respond to the testing process in various ways, and thus the chapter outlines ways to respond in diverse situations. It discusses the role of the psychometrist in the testing experience, and the importance of building rapport to maximize client participation. Finally, it ends with scenarios from “sample clients” and provides suggestions for ways to work with unique individuals.
