ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 is the first of two chapters with a focus on ethics in the translation curriculum. It explores the concept of ethical responsibility as a goal of translator education and the implications of translator identity status for student learning. The chapter introduces examples of pre-translation activities to enhance ethical sensitivity, which include a structured approach to identify and address ethical issues in different text types. The final section of the chapter focuses on selected topics in the ethics of literary and commercial translation. The activities help raise awareness of wider societal factors that impact on who has opportunities to translate and debates about the relevance of experiential knowledge to the translation process. They are also designed to develop ethical thinking in relation to adult and children’s fiction translation, localisation, and transcreation, among others, through direct translation tasks, advisory reports for commercial clients, and comparative analysis.
