ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 focuses on technologies and ethics in the translation curriculum. It emphasises the importance of “digital reflexivity”, understood as a process of consciously bringing technology-related learning challenges to the fore, acknowledging the affective response, and reflecting on the personal resources available to address them. Machine translation and its ethical implications are also highlighted, including its use in situations in which people experience particular vulnerabilities. Activities encourage reflection on the potential for exploitation in the platform economy and the positive affordances of technologies for professional and non-professional translation in certain (crisis) situations. Finally, the chapter explores the potential of Wikipedia as a learning resource and a learning environment. Activities facilitate engagement with the site’s policy of “neutral point of view” and the implications of that policy for translation practice. An example of Wikipedia’s use as a learning environment is discussed in the context of its potential to develop skills in relational ethics.
