ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the case study that concerns the Superkilen park in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, as well as the most populous, which has been involved in an extensive regeneration operation which, in the last 40 years, has transformed it from a city in decline – which has affected the port and industries since the 1980s – to one of the most liveable and happiest cities in Europe. Health is one of the factors that significantly contributes to the happiness index; in agreement, the Municipality of Copenhagen intervened both with actions relating to social assistance and with interventions aimed at encouraging healthy choices by making them the most desirable one. The idea is to implement an inclusive urban planning strategy. In Copenhagen, liveability is improved by creating not only new housing, clean air, sustainable jobs and transport but also more physical spaces where people can meet, socialize and play in order to build or improve the social fabric.
