ABSTRACT

This introductory chapter outlines the principles and methodologies pursed in this book. Time and space create, as we know, the fundamental framework of all human existence. The connecting elements are the trails which all human beings pursue throughout their lives. Both the theoretical and the practical aspects of trailing, especially as developed by the essayist Robert Moor, are illuminated here and then tested in light of many different medieval and early modern texts, literary, philosophical, and religious. One of the best examples to illustrate the trail can be found in Wolfram von Eschenbach’s Titurel, but here the misunderstanding of the meaning of the trail has tragic consequences. Literally, from here, many trails lead into the subsequent chapters and allow us to understand deeply the life philosophy embraced by the various medieval poets.
