ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the role of feeding as an expression of care in the performance Heaven or Hell? by the collective Feminist Art Workers. Drawing on care theory, this chapter considers how Feminist Art Workers emphasized collaboration and mutual caretaking within the work, which is premised around performance and/or audience members attempting to feed themselves or others with four-foot-long forks. As such, this chapter argues that the collective unsettled the diminution of caretaking as merely feminized labor and posited the gesture of caring for others and oneself as a radical act aimed at restructuring society. As such, this chapter highlights ways in which feminist artists and activists sought to draw on notions that have been historically feminized as sources of strength in their art and advocacy for gender equality.
