ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces the reader to the discipline of linguistics and deals with what the learning of linguistics entails, namely, observation, prediction, and hypothesis formation. It provides a number of simple linguistic puzzles to sharpen one’s analytical skills and is for the ‘uninitiated’ in linguistics. It also introduces the reader to the major language families in India.
