ABSTRACT

The chapter introduces the notion of constituents and the tests of constituency, formal and functional categories, and the distinction between adjuncts and arguments. The first section also introduces Case theory, Theta-Criterion, Empty Pronouns and Control, X-bar Syntax, and Syntactic Typology.

The second section deals with movements and restrictions on movements: NP and Wh, Bounding, Subjacency, and the Empty Category Principle. The third section introduces syntactic–semantic (functional) features like Tense, Aspect, Mood, Case, Polarity, Transitivity, Wh-criterion, Topic and Focus, and the notion of binding. The syntactic characteristics/features of Indian languages are presented in the next section. The chapter concludes with a brief introduction to minimalism.
