ABSTRACT
The chapter introduces the reader to lexical semantics (word meaning, sense and reference, semantic relations, and semantic field) and logical semantics (truth conditions and propositions, ambiguity, and scope relations. The reading of scope and quantifiers is also discussed. The third section introduces pragmatics with a discussion of speech acts, felicity conditions, conversational implicatures, and relevance theory. The semantic characteristics of Indian languages conclude the chapter.
