ABSTRACT

The key act of resistance to normative healthcare provision worldwide is the same as the key act of resistance to political domination by minority authorities worldwide, as autocracies, “hard” or “soft”. Gonzalo is a model for resistance to an established order – an authority or an autocratic condition – promising positive change, a revolution. This chapter aims to compare and contrast three approaches to challenging and dismantling historically accumulated hierarchical structures of power across healthcare groups through a discussion of “team working”. Michael West is the leading figure in the UK in theory and practice of team behaviour, bringing an organizational psychology mindset to healthcare practice. As healthcare organizations are placed under unusual pressures, habitual practices, structures and rhythms of work have been constantly disrupted through high levels of sickness and turnover. In healthcare, “team” is invested with quality and weight, even though it is an arbitrary signifier for a concrete social process.
