ABSTRACT

After the discussion of strategy, in Chapter 6 we will turn to the role of organizational culture. In this section, we will define culture and look at its unique interaction with the organizational system. Case study examples will emphasize the importance of culture on organizational performance. As well, we will see a number of cases in which a problem that was originally thought to be a strategy problem, turned out, instead, to be a cultural problem. A major question for some will be, “How do I determine if my existing culture is an enabler, or an inhibitor to the success of the organizational system, and what do I do about it if it is not?” We will discuss this, and additionally, will discuss a case study that bears significantly on this question.
