ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the main considerations that attend to the selection and use of analytical tools in corpus linguistics to study health communication. It introduces established corpus linguistics techniques for the analysis of discourse – namely frequency analysis, keyword analysis, collocation analysis, cluster analysis, and concordance analysis – and provides practical demonstrations of how these can be used to illuminate the linguistic nuances of health-related communication. The chapter also provides critical insights regarding the limitations of established corpus linguistics analytical techniques and suggests how such limitations might be mitigated for the purposes of health communication research.
