ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with spoken health communication, and we begin by briefly reflecting on research interests related to spoken health interactions generally, before considering the contribution that corpus-aided studies can make to this area. Reviewing the literature on applications of corpus methods to health consultations, research presentations, and television shows representing health topics, we demonstrate the breadth of available sources for investigating how people talk about health. We report the specific corpus methods used to examine features of spoken health communication and offer examples of how researchers have navigated the challenges of compiling spoken health corpora.
