ABSTRACT

An organisation cannot succeed without effective leaders because they are the people who set the strategy and steer the course in order to fulfil it. Although many individuals have undertaken leadership training, the requirements of a leader have changed substantially in recent years, partly owing to changing expectations of employees and partly as a result of growth in technology and complexity. This chapter examines those changes and looks beyond the traditional perceptions, explaining the role of the leader and the behaviour and attitudes that are supportive in creating a culture which is able to withstand the pressures that mitigate against effectiveness.
