ABSTRACT

This chapter shows what is possible with long-term psychotherapy that extends well beyond the kind of five-day encounters. Li Yanling wrote the initial treatment report, the names of family members already changed to protect confidentiality. Wang Fan, a woman in her early 30s, made the initial contact with Li Yanling when, after taking some counseling courses, Wang Fan realized that she and her mother were both emotionally compromised. During individual sessions, Wang Fan mostly talked about her own and her parents’ histories, her conflicts with her parents and in-laws, and differences she had with her husband in terms of chores and child education. After six months of seeing Wang Fan for individual therapy, seeing that Wang Fan inevitably placed blame for her complaints on others, but especially on Zhou Wei, Li Yanling suggested that they change to couple therapy.
