ABSTRACT

Chapter one explains the academic discipline of history, its general value, and how developing a historical mindset matters for leadership and management. It establishes that history has always been aimed at generating good leadership and that its usefulness derives from its ability to understand the past and teach its significance. History is a form of sensemaking that contextualizes events and searches for patterns that explain human interaction, allowing for comparisons across time and space that serve as a guide through current dilemmas, while also forming the basis of group identity. This chapter emphasized that leaders who learn to think like historians can better leverage the past for organizational success.
