ABSTRACT

Theoriginal modelling of the head is much obscured now by dirt; the hands, however, aremore distinct and very delicate. The rich dress, hangings, and carpets, are executed with singular solidity and care. A male portrait holding a book, with a landscape background. The work ofan excellent painter, though unknown to the author, of the Netherlandish school, about 1520–1530. The bulk of this collection consists of a number of excellent pictures of the Flemish and Dutch schools; but it also contains various specimens of the Italian, the German, the French, and the Spanish schools. The only picture of the Spanish School is a male portrait, witha sword at his side, bearing the name of Velasquez, and inenergy of conception well worthy of him, but in the glow of the coloursassimilating more to the best period of the Venetian school.
