ABSTRACT

The republic of Holland has been an object of universal admiration, and cannot fail to engage the curiosity and attention of the remotest posterity. Its inhabitants have on all occasions distinguished themselves by their industry and enterprizing genius; but are particularly celebrated sor their knowledge of maritime affairs, and their expeditions to the continent of India. In the beginning of the tenth century, the German branch of the Carlovinians became extinct. In 1602 the states-general united these different societies into one body, to which they gave the name of the East India Company. The Hollanders were continually fending over fresh colonists, ships, and troops, while the Portuguese were left without any forces but their own.
