ABSTRACT

The interviews with independent filmmakers in Yangon were as much about the political changes in Myanmar as they were about filmmaking careers. Both of these are intertwined in the country after the military dictatorship opened up in 2011. Hnin Ei Hlaing (Snow) is making documentary films that feature strong female protagonists and stories. Thaddhi and Thu Thu Shein have established an independent film festival, Wathann Film Festival, to support and grow an independent Burmese filmmaking scene. The Maw Naing has grown up in a political family and witnessed student protests throughout his life. His artwork reflects everyday reality in contemporary Myanmar. All four of them have been studying at Yangon Film School and later used the school’s network to get support from European festivals, funders, exhibitors or collaborators.
