ABSTRACT

This chapter makes the proposal that costume design can be included in the fashion history curriculum and includes a suggested class schedule if teachers cannot have two separate classes for costume design and fashion history. The chapter also covers the inclusion of design projects in a Fashion History class to better communicate the history covered in the class. The beginning of the chapter discusses the concept of decentralizing material in the Fashion History class, which leads to more on the topic of inclusive pedagogy in costume-related classes. The chapter includes suggestions for design projects to include in a Fashion History class, as well as encouraging teachers to read a variety of scripts to increase their knowledge of diverse playwrights, and a list of recommended plays. Plays representing diverse perspectives are useful when teaching fashion history from a non-linear perspective that is not centered on Western Europe. The reader will have an increased knowledge about connections between design and history that can be applied to the costume classroom, and they will also have a greater understanding of how to use inclusive pedagogy techniques for costume students.
