ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 presents concepts and theoretical approaches important for understanding revolutionary movements, how they develop, and why they succeed or fail. The concepts of social movement and revolutionary social movement are explained and distinctive forms and examples of each are described. The five factors essential to the development and success of revolutionary movements are introduced and illustrated through elements of specific case studies. Major theories of revolution, including the Marxist, frustration-aggression, systems, modernization, and modern structural theories, are presented and evaluated in terms of how each explains or neglects to explain the development of the five factors necessary for the success of revolutionary movements.
