ABSTRACT

This chapter builds upon the foundations of adventure group psychotherapy (for simplicity sake it is referred to as adventure therapy) by discussing several areas of consideration to keep in mind in adventure therapy work. Particularly, it is important to recognize that adventure therapy is guided by recent research and information on trauma and how trauma impacts all aspects of adventure psychotherapy group work. Thus, understanding the role that trauma plays, the neuroscience of trauma, and how adventure therapy is naturally aligned with trauma-informed practice is important. Secondly, it is essential to understand the additional ethical considerations that need to be addressed when engaging in adventure therapy. Similarly, how adventure therapy—when facilitated appropriately and competently—can embrace and promote social justice is highlighted. It is key to remember the role that both nature and mindfulness can play in adventure therapy, although neither is required for effective adventure therapy treatment. These building blocks of trauma-informed care, ethics, social justice, and nature influence the ability to successfully engage clients through the group process: beginning, middle, and ending. Finally, the chapter discusses the integration of adventure therapy with other evidence-based treatments.
