ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors discuss assessment of the client, the group, and the facilitator in both things occurring externally or outside of the group process as well as things going on with the group context. Individual Point a refers to everything important about the person seeking treatment, including social identities, strengths, limitations, motivation, and connections outside of the group. Group Point A refers to the status of and conditions within the group at any point in time. Facilitator Point a refers to the facilitator’s resources, including their group plan, personal toolkit, contextual awareness, and self-awareness, which the authors refer to as the four buckets. Individual Point b refers to the clinical purpose or intent individual members have for participating in the group. Group Point B is the operational purpose of the group. Facilitator universal Point Bs refer to the values and beliefs that create a lens through which facilitators view client and group action, affect, and attitude. Finally, it is the practitioner’s job to assess the environment, specifically the interactions of the group members and their environment context. All of the factors are considered in order to best plan, adapt, and facilitate adventure therapy groups.
