ABSTRACT

Shaping the environment refers to the efforts of the practitioner to establish a physical and social environment that is the most conducive for personal change and growth. That environment includes four components: a social culture defined by the seven adventure beliefs, the therapeutic relationships that exist in the group, the authentic engagement participants have in the work of the group, and the impact of the physical setting on the group. The facilitator’s attention to the positive development of all four of these components, as well as any squigglies that arise in the course of group sessions, is a critical part of shaping a culture within the group that supports personal growth and change.
