ABSTRACT

Action research is a way of initiating change in social systems—societies, communities, organizations or groups—by involving members of the group in the research process. The researcher examines the way the group functions and the problems affecting the group and then helps members of the group bring about the needed change that they perceive is right for them. Action research is a form of inductive, practical research that focuses on improving understanding of a social problem and on achieving a real change or improvement in the way people function in groups. The chapter describes the method and how to use it.
