ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the factors that influence the mixed methods design chosen for a study, and describes several classes of mixed methods designs. No one mixed method research design has yet been found to always produce better or more valid findings. Rather, the research question, research objectives, research resources and time available will always influence the determination to employ what is perceived to be the most appropriate design. This discussion of mixed methods research designs describes a variety of approaches and is structured around what is perceived to be four main classes of design decision options: methods, objectives, sequence and an analysis emphasis.
