ABSTRACT

Partisan warfare has been known for almost as long as war itself. Guerillas made their first appearance over 2,300 years ago in China. In more recent times partisans fought in the American War of Independence, the Peninsular War, the American Civil War, the South African War, in World War I with Lawrence, and then in Russia and Ireland. The operational techniques of partisan warfare have undergone many changes in the course of time, but much that is old is just as applicable today as it was in the past. The partisans ‘on the other side of the hill’ are therefore the ideal intelligence corps for their master. The Partisan Handbook was issued to the partisans in 1942, when the Soviets had as yet had little experience in organizing partisan intelligence. The partisan movement relied not only on the full-timers with the detachments, but also on its numerous part-timers, the agents.
