ABSTRACT

The Bechers’ work has had a wide influence beyond photography on minimalist and conceptual art. To even be considered art, photography had to concern itself with the traditions of fine art. The great photographic technician and landscape artist, Ansel Adams, made the word 'previsualisation' popular and it has stuck in the photographic vocabulary ever since. The black-and-white fine print can be more subject to the photographer's personal taste and can therefore be used as part of the interpretative art. Described as 'new objectivity', his work aligned with the Neue Sachlichkeit movement in German art from the 1920s and '30s. One of the threats posed by digital imaging is that it is a colour capture technology. The creation of black-and-white images nowadays is very much a post-production event - a ‘cool’ alternative look for a colour original. The great photographic technician and landscape artist, Ansel Adams, made the word ‘previsualisation’ popular and it has stuck in the photographic vocabulary ever since.
