ABSTRACT

Santiago Lyon was Vice President and Director of Photography of the Associated Press (AP) from 2003 to 2016. Under his direction, the AP won numerous photojournalism awards, including three Pulitzer Prizes. An award-winning photographer himself, Lyon covered the civil war in El Salvador, the American invasion of Panama, the First Gulf War, the Balkan Wars, Somalia’s civil war, and the rise of the Taliban in Afghanistan. This chapter presents an interview of Lyon in which he discusses his journey from his childhood days to the Director of Photography at the AP. In the interview, Lyon also shares his experience in capturing photographs of some incidences in Syria and Ukraine.
