ABSTRACT
This chapter discussesthe negative issues which an over-reliance on single image observation can have, particularly in an understanding of developing narrative at a later point. The life of a creative can be a solitary one that can lead to a sense of insecurity and the community's online platforms can often provide essential support during moments of indecision. The development of visual literacy allows young photographers to explain photography to those who recognize its existence but look no further than the image itself. The young photographer then becomes a conduit outside the photographic community for a reinterpretation of photography as a language. Digital platforms, and the way in which students engage with them, must bear some responsibility for the lack of awareness of the importance of narrative in visual storytelling. The rise of social anxiety, lack of resilience and a loss of social confidence amongst millennial students has been widely reported and attributed to extended social media usage.
