ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the role of the photographer to students as being that of a visual problem solver and storyteller - an explanation as many young photographers see the medium as little more than a process of the creation of an image. It addresses the issues that surround even a basic grasp of what a visual narrative is and how to begin creating one. The London-based photographer Brian David Stevens began a self-initiated body of work in early 2017 documenting the tragedy of the Grenfell Tower tower block fire. Each day he would visit the scene of the tragedy and create images that he felt reflected the emotional power of the resultant structure. The concept of the personal project may well seem alien to anyone who sees photography purely as a form of hobby but to any photographer fully engaged with the medium it is the most important aspect of any form of photographic medium.
