ABSTRACT

This chapter explores art projects that recruit multiple or collective photographic voices with the aim of creating more inclusive documentary forms. Drawing on a history of the critique of photographic representation, the author analysis of the three artists in the chapter focuses on this complex relationship between self- representation and empowerment. Indeed, in 2001, Ewald cowrote a book that outlines how to teach photography to children, I Wanna Take Me a Picture: Teaching Photography and Writing to Children. Anthony Luvera, an Australianborn contemporary artist living in London, has been engaged in participatory and collaborative forms of photography since 2001-most notably in producing what he calls "Assisted SelfPortraits" with the homeless. It had an explicit goal of democratizing the practice of photography and collectivizing practice, working with community groups and unions, and providing darkrooms, workshops and in some cases cameras to the working class.
