ABSTRACT

The through-the-lens metering systems of modern cameras cope very well with calculating a balance between fill flash and the ambient light. Amateur photographers may find the flash has contributed too much to the image and its effect is noticeable. Use the flash power compensation button on the camera to reduce flash output by a third or half stop. Professionals prefer the leaf shutters in medium- and large-format camera lenses to the focal plane shutters in 35mm and most D-SLR cameras when balancing flash. Leaf shutters sync at all speeds. Many D-SLRs now use pulsed flash techniques to achieve high-speed shutter synchronization. This can work to balance ambient light to flash at wide apertures.
