ABSTRACT

A manufacturer usually makes one recommendation and then will mention alternative performance compromises possible with other types of developer. Developer will have a big influence on how the negative image will form. Today’s popular powder and liquid developers would generally be called ‘fine grain’. Developers can be bought for low- or high-contrast results. Some developers offer increased edge sharpness in the processed negative and are called ‘acutance’ developers. Some developers have a short shelf life once mixed. Others, like classic Agfa Rodinal, have a very long shelf life and can work at very great dilutions to give unique results. There is a massive amount of knowledge in the public domain about the effect of different developers on different films. Currently the best place to look is on the Internet.
