ABSTRACT

‘Black and white’ is the name that has been used by photographers to describe images that contain a range of tones from white through light, mid- and then dark greys to full black. Greyscale is the name used in the computer world to describe what most people would just call a black-and-white picture. It is technically more precise, embodying the idea of an image composed of a range of shades of grey. Whereas a black-and-white image will consist only of greys from black to white, a monochrome image can consist of any of the possible shades of any colour. For the purposes of fine art, black and white can be considered a more beautiful and more refined way to see nature. In documentary images, black and white adds an undeniable power and authority.
