ABSTRACT

The first big distinction to make is between fibre-based (FB) and resin-coated (RC) papers. RC papers are convenient to use and require little washing. Fibre paper is the advanced photographer’s favourite but requires slower processing and additional washing stages. Darkroom papers also come in fixed contrast grades or as variable-contrast papers with warm working, neutral or cold working emulsions. The paper base can vary in weight and colour, from pure white to cream and creamy yellow. The paper layer in resin-coated paper is sealed beneath a layer of polyester. The photosensitive layer is then coated directly on to the plastic. FB papers have no surface coating. The photosensitive emulsion is laid down directly on to the absorbent paper surface. This gives the image a depth and quality not available with RC papers.
