ABSTRACT

Dodging and burning can only be carried out after processing if you scan the print and work digitally on the scanned image. Alternatively, you can lighten parts of the image on a final darkroom print by using bleach. ‘Farmer’s reducer’ or ‘reducing agent’ is the same bleach used in sepia toner but is combined with a strong solution of fixer. It will bleach away the image but can be applied gently with cotton wool buds or balls. Most workers use the bleach in one hand and a water hose attached to the tap in the other and work very slowly to achieve the results they need.
