ABSTRACT

Amateur photographers can use photographic emulsion in liquid form on any surface they like, as long as they can get the material into the darkroom for coating, developing, fixing and washing. The light-sensitive emulsion used to coat photographic film and paper can be bought as a liquid. This can be painted on to alternative surfaces under darkroom conditions and an image produced through exposure and development. It is sometimes necessary to use a mix of liquid emulsion and PVA glue to begin with to get a bond between subsequent layers of liquid emulsion and a non-porous surface such as plastic, china, metal or glass. The exposure is made in the normal way using a negative in an enlarger or projector.
