ABSTRACT

The range of printing papers for inkjet printers is very wide and growing all the time. The range of both surface finish and paper types is now much wider than the papers and finishes offered with conventional darkroom papers. The actual type of paper, its coarseness and surface finish, will have a major impact on how an image looks. Traditional photographic-look papers with a very clear printing surface can take a range of surface finishes. High-gloss papers can look like a resin-coated darkroom print; matt papers can be particularly attractive with some subjects and with larger prints when surface reflection (especially behind glass in a frame) can be distracting. The best practical advice is to invest in a paper manufacturer’s trial pack and get going with one image to compare results.
