ABSTRACT

Every photographer’s business is different — some run very successful businesses without the need of help from others; some hire people as and when they need them; some have full-time permanent staff; and some have relationships with agents, galleries or libraries. Another good reason to get some help is if people haven’t got the skillset or experience to deal with a particular area of expertise – bookkeeping or shoot production. The advantage of a good resale agent is that they can very often help to give photographers a balanced, uncoloured opinion of their work and guide them in their development of both career and visual style. Photo libraries, also known as stock libraries, image libraries or picture libraries, market and sell existing imagery. Although they are agents in a sense, it is rare the people will have a relationship on an individual basis – many of them are simply distributors of images.
