ABSTRACT

The photograph on this spread was taken by Esther Bubley. It is a perfect choice to show how deconstruction proceeds and was first presented by Arnold Gassan, a photography professor from Ohio University. An image that represents a concept is called the signifier. That concept, whatever it is, is called ‘the signified’. The sign always comprises the signifier, the object and the signified. Roland Barthes, philosopher and linguist, stated that: ‘In advertising the signification of the image is undoubtedly intentional’. Whether the intend to work in the advertising industry or , advertisements are probably the best place to study meaning in photography. The signified concept is all that is associated with Italy - it is a conceptual still life as it is just an arrangement of inanimate objects for the reasons of aestheticism. The signified concept is represented by the outline figure of pedestrians.
