ABSTRACT

The language of the art world is often as impenetrable and the specialised as photographic jargon. Aesthetics/taste - concerned with the appreciation of beauty; the ability to recognise and distinguish aesthetic standards. Authenticity - emotionally appropriate and significant. Constructed image - effectively an art installation, the final purpose of which is to be photographed. An image that has been built and is therefore not ‘found’. Staged photography is related - where situations are acted out and photographed. Context - the setting for an image, which might include texts, or a publication, an exhibition as well as social and historical aspects. Postmodernism - literally ‘after modernism’ - a fluid style and concept that grew from critical theory and a dissatisfaction with art theories to invigorate all areas of the visual and literary arts in the latter part of the 20th century.
